The House of Gaviarra is located on top of the fortress, with magnificent views, worthy of a
fairytale where the Minho river, Tui’s cathedral, the farmlands and the distant mountains play a
central role. It is also strategically located next to the oldest entrance to the fortress, the Gate of
Gaviarra, part of the Camino de Santiago. This elegant urban manor was built in the 19th century by
order of the 1st Baron of Urgeira as a gift for his eldest daughter. In the neoclassical style, is
entirely built in stone and enriched with profusely decorated bronze balcony guards on the outside.
In the mid-20th century was entirely refurbished, including the entire structure and roof. The
interior is magnificently decorated with the best materials, all the rooms covered in wallpaper
(Versace, Laura Ashley, Sanderson and Thibaut). The master suite is entirely covered in wallpaper
(walls and ceiling) depicting Aesop fables. The second floor room is also entirely covered with a
Toyle de Jouy wallpaper depicting an 18th century garden party at Chantilly. The main living room
fireplace is topped by a late-gothic carved stone that was found during the 20th century works and
the red marble dining room fireplace was brought from France alongside the 18th century cast iron
refractory plates. The terrace floor is hydraulic mosaic. Its two gardens are perfectly maintained,
the smaller ` next to the terrace ` with camellias, a rhododendron and two magnolias. The larger `
next to the fortress wall ` is decorated with several camellias, some quite rare; you can also find a
rare example of “Bela Portuguesa”, a rosebush created by a French botanist in the 19th century.
Acquiring these houses is also acquiring history, culture and beauty. They are heritage inside the
heritage that is the Fortress of Valença, national monument since 1910 and UNESCO world heritage
candidate.
